Dr. Katie Collins is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Global Health Coordinator at the UW–Madison School of Nursing. She is a nurse practitioner with certifications in both the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care and Family Nurse Practitioner specialties. Katie also currently practices in the Family Medicine Department at SSM Health. Her prior global health experience includes medical mission work in Gramothe, Haiti, as well as disaster preparedness research on the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. She also practiced for over three years at a federally qualified health center in the Chicago suburbs which provides care to minority and underserved patient populations. Katie teaches in the DNP and undergraduate nursing programs at UW–Madison and directs the study abroad programs at the School of Nursing each summer. Additionally, she provides oversight for all things global health related at the school.

Clinical Scholarship focus areas

Teaching and Learning

  • Develops and evaluates global health, planetary health, and social justice related content at the School of Nursing including updating curriculum across programs and teaching didactic and clinical courses.
  • Develops and coordinates international and domestic study abroad opportunities at the School of Nursing.

Professional Practice and Education

  • Continues to practice clinically in family medicine specialty.
  • Precepts Doctor of Nursing Practice students each semester through her clinical practice.
  • Provides mentorship for Doctor of Nursing Practice student projects.
  • Member of the UW–Madison Global Health Institute Advisory Committee and the Global Health Interprofessional Education Committee.

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Actively collaborates with community programs including Jewish Social Services and is a member of the UW–Madison Global Health and Migration Interest Group.
  • Current Board Member of the United Nations Association of Dane County.
