Krause to serve as acting IRS Commissioner; O’Donnell retires after distinguished career

Melanie Krause ’06, PhD’10 has been named the new action commissioner at the Internal Revenue Service. She has served as the IRS chief operating officer since April 2024 after acting as deputy Commissioner of operations support since January of the same year. Before joining the IRS, Krause spent 12 years in the federal oversight community, including the Government Accountability Office and the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General.
A three-time Badger, Krause earned her PhD from the School of Nursing in 2010. She was one of the first seven nursing students to join the School of Nursing’s early-entry PhD program when it started in 2003. Krause spoke about her professional journey and her experience in the PhD program in a 2021 interview.
