Why did you choose to pursue nursing? Or, how did you know you wanted to be a nurse?
I chose to pursue nursing because of my grandma, who died of leukemia cancer. I visited the hospital numerous times when I was younger and watched nurses delicately care for my grandma. It was their empathy and caring nature that greatly inspired me. I hope one day I can help make a positive impact and provide the same compassionate care for others.
What has been your favorite class or unit in the nursing program so far?
My favorite class is Nursing 316 (Foundations of Nursing Practice: Experiential Learning). I can practice essential nursing skills such as administering medications, taking vital signs, and applying the new knowledge at UW Health’s University Hospital.
Where were your first-semester clinical placements? And what were your experiences like?
I was placed on a medical-surgical short-stay unit at UW Health. Overall, it was a great learning experience. I worked alongside a nurse, completed physical assessments on patients, and talked through cases with my clinical instructors. There were and always will be nerves and difficulties, but it is all worth it when you see the positive impact you are making for patients.
How would you describe the culture of the nursing program?
Everything so far about UW’s nursing program has been extremely positive! The students and faculty are all very supportive. They all want you to succeed, and no one will ever judge you for reaching out for help.
What are your career aspirations after graduation?
After graduating, I plan to work in either pediatrics or neonatal nursing for a couple years. Then possibly return to school to pursue an advanced practice nursing degree.
What advice would you give to individuals who are interested in pursuing nursing?
If you are interested in pursuing nursing, I would say GO FOR IT! Nursing is an amazing profession with all sorts of flexibility and numerous specialties to work in! With that said, doing well academically is important along with building proper studying habits. But keep in mind that grades don’t tell the whole story. I encourage you to explore different clubs, volunteer over the summer, or even get involved in research. These extracurricular activities can be related or non-related to nursing. Just do what interests you! Then how those skills will help you become a better nurse. Lastly, you should make the most of the time you have in high school or college because trust me, it will go by in the blink of an eye!
What are you involved in or interested in outside of nursing school?
I work as a CNA at a long-term and rehabilitative care facility in my hometown. Other extracurricular activities I like to do in my free time include snowboarding, weight-lifting, playing chess, and CrossFit training.
What is your favorite UW tradition?
My favorite UW tradition would be “Jump Around” and singing “Build Me Up, Buttercup” at the football games.
What’s the number one artist, band, or album on your Spotify/Apple Music playlist?
My number one band on Spotify is Coldplay!
