About Mental, Psychosocial, and Behavioral Health and Well-Being Research

Faculty research in this area promotes mental, psychosocial, and behavioral health and well-being for all people across the life course. This work seeks to understand and address the complex factors that influence mental health by advancing equity, resilience, and recovery in diverse communities and contexts.

Integrating nursing science, behavioral health, and psychosocial approaches, this research area explores causes, consequences, and interventions for mental health challenges. Faculty-led research teams investigate topics such as stress, trauma, violence, adversity, marginalization, alcohol and substance use, and mental health services, with a commitment to improving quality of life and optimizing healthspan.

Representative areas of inquiry include:

  • Investigating biopsychosocial and structural determinants of mental health and well-being;
  • Developing and evaluating interventions to foster resilience, response, and recovery;
  • Advancing mental health services and systems to better address marginalization and systemic inequities;
  • Promoting equitable access to care and resources across the lifespan;
  • Innovating approaches to prevent and treat mental health concerns in individuals, families, and communities.
