The Lexicon of English-HMoob Medical Terminology is a resource firmly rooted in the Hmong communities it serves. Its genesis lies in a profound desire to address the distinct challenges and needs faced by the Hmong American community within the realm of medical interpretation. While prior research has illuminated paths to bridging language and cultural divides in medical contexts, a crucial gap existed in comprehending the specific requirements of the Hmong community.

Our previous research with Hmong community members and Hmong-speaking interpreters shed light on a pressing need—the creation of a Hmong-English medical dictionary. Such a resource was seen as instrumental in aiding interpreters in grasping the intricacies of English medical terminology. It became increasingly apparent that what was needed were translations that not only upheld technical precision but also honored cultural sensitivities, ensuring both effective and culturally attuned communication. The dictionary also includes material on the linguistic culture of the Hmong medical terms that are presented. Thus, the Lexicon of English-HMoob Medical Terminology was conceived to fulfill this need.

The purpose of the dictionary is to provide translations that not only maintain technical precision but also respect cultural sensitivities as well as culturally nuanced words, ultimately facilitating effective and culturally attuned communication for Hmong patients, interpreters, and clinicians.

What process was involved to create it?

This dictionary was created in collaboration with the Hmong community including Hmong elders, interpreters, bilingual individuals, healthcare professionals, and students.

While this dictionary was led by Maichou Lor, PhD, RN, it is a collaborative effort with Nathan Badenoch, PhD, a linguist anthropologist, and in close partnership with Hmong community members and an advisory group of eight community members. The community advisory board members were Lisa Vang, Pa Yiar Khang, Phinter Thao, Nhia Soua Lee, Kayla Hang, Cailtin Vang, and Angie Lee. Our research team members include Bao Xiong, Va Khang, and Pangyia Yang.
