How to Apply

Admission to our programs entails a thorough and comprehensive review of each application, and focuses on selecting applicants who are anticipated to make positive contributions to the university and the nursing profession. We seek to admit students who demonstrate strong academic ability, leadership skills, intellectual curiosity, resilience, cultural competency, and enthusiasm for nursing.

I am a High School Student

To apply to become a pre-nursing student on-campus, submit your application to UW–Madison and list nursing as your major of interest.

During the pre-nursing years, students must complete all nursing admission prerequisite courses and requirements, as well as all other degree requirements that are not built into the two-year nursing program plan. This includes the university’s General Education Requirements and coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, electives, and the nursing program’s math requirement.

I am a Pre-Nursing Student at UW–Madison

Pre-nursing students must complete all nursing admission prerequisite courses and requirements, as well as all other degree requirements that are not built into the two-year nursing program plan. This includes the university’s General Education Requirements and coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, electives, and the nursing program’s math requirement.

After fall grades are completed, typically in the second year at UW–Madison, students apply to the Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

I have an Associate's Degree in Nursing

Students with an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN), equivalent degree, or diploma in nursing from an accredited nursing program are only eligible for admission consideration to the BSN@Home program if they have completed the required coursework, reside in one of the 50 United States, and hold an RN license in that state.

I am a Transfer Student

All transfer students must to apply to UW–Madison and indicate Pre-Nursing as their intended major.

Students who have completed or will complete the required prerequisites by the end of the spring term prior to the program start must also need to apply to the nursing program through NursingCAS.

Students who are actively or previously enrolled in a bachelor of science in nursing program at another institution are not eligible to apply for admission into UW–Madison’s BSN programs. To request an exception to this policy submit a Petition for Special Consideration.

All transfer students will be required to complete all nursing degree requirements as part of the curriculum at UW–Madison.

I have a Non-Nursing Bachelor’s Degree

Second-degree students can apply to the accelerated or traditional BSN programs after completing a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field from an accredited institution. The first degree must be completed by the program start date. Please review the information closely as the accelerated and traditional BSN prerequisite requirements have different due dates and completion expectations. Second-degree candidates cannot enter UW–Madison as a pre-nursing second-degree candidate.
