Student Programs

Underrepresented Student Mentorship Program

Designed for pre-nursing, nursing, and graduate nursing students of color, this program provides an informal way to collaborate and build relationships with peers.

The goal is to cultivate a reciprocal and collaborative mentor/mentee relationship with mutual goals and shared accountability for the success of the relationship. Participants are matched based on interests within nursing.

School of Nursing PEOPLE Program

The School of Nursing works with the PEOPLE (Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence) each summer by participating in a health care high school internship and a middle school nursing career exploration workshop. PEOPLE High School and Middle School students learn the roles nurses play through clinical internships, simulation labs, field trips, and interactive activities.

 Student of Color Talking Groups

One of the current School of Nursing Diversity Initiatives is to engage pre-nursing and nursing students of color more and understand what support and resources they need from the School of Nursing.

This is a peer-driven interactive space, and the feedback from these circles are used to assess the academic and social needs students of color have. Talking groups meet frequently throughout each semester.

Lawton Undergraduate Minority Retention Grant

The Lawton Grant was established to increase the retention and graduation rates of underrepresented students and reduce their loan indebtedness post-graduation. The award can range from $1,000 to $3,000 per academic year, with a maximum of 8 semesters of eligibility.

Nursing 510: Culturally Congruent Care

This seminar assists students in building self-awareness, increasing knowledge, and advancing clinical skills needed to provide culturally congruent, person-centered care to patients with diverse backgrounds. This 3 credit seminar fulfills the UW Ethnic Studies General Education requirement.

UW–Madison Diversity & Health Student Organizations

  • MSNO (Multicultural Student Nurses Organization) is dedicated to improving the experiences of students and care of culturally diverse population across all levels of nursing education and care settings.
  • AHANA: AHANA stands for African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American. We are grounded in the belief of providing students with an essential, well-rounded perspective of the healthcare field, enriching experiences, and community service opportunities.
  • MSMC (Medical Students for Minority Concerns) aims to introduce students to the health challenges of minority populations and their access to healthcare in Madison.
